Russian Beet-Sugar Production to Fall 3% Y/Y to 6m Tons: IKAR

(Bloomberg) --Output in 2017-18 season starting in Aug. to drop from 6.2m tons this season, Evgeny Ivanov, analyst at consultant IKAR in Moscow, says by email.

• Beets’ roots now catching up in development after colder-than-usual weather slowed growth in April-June
IKAR’s recent crop tour found plants in “excellent” condition
• NOTE: July 20, Sugar beat plantings up ~8% y/y at 1.2m ha: government data
• NOTE: Marex Spectron said earlier Monday that a Russian beet test suggested roots will weigh much less than last year, according to emailed report
• “At this stage it looks as if sugar production could fall by around 500,000 tons”
