Russia could import 2.5 mln t wheat from Kazakhstan-IKAR

MOSCOW, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Russia, facing heavy drought damage to this year's harvest, could import a relatively high volume of wheat from neighbouring Kazakhstan - as much as 2.5 million tonnes in the current crop year, a leading Russiasn grain analyst said on Thursday.

"We can expect massive wheat export from Kazakhstan" to Russia, Dmitry Rylko, head of the Institute for Agriculture Market Studies (IKAR), told a conference in Moscow. He did not give figures for last season's imports.

Even in good harvest years, Russia normally imports a small volume of wheat from Kazakhstan to its border regions in the Urals and Siberia, as well as some top quality milling wheat which Russia cannot supply.

Rylko said Russia was also likely to import some maize (corn) from Ukraine and some flour from Belarus in the current season.
