Russian Feed Grain Sales Gain After Crop Damage in Europe, U.S.

Bloomberg

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Russia, the fourth largest wheat exporter, is gaining on feed grain sales because of crop damage in the U.S. and Europe, according to Oleg Sukhanov, an analyst at the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies.

Russia's grain crop may be as much as 92 million metric tons, including 56 million tons of wheat, according to Ikar, a Moscow-based research company. That's 51 percent larger than last year's harvest of 60.9 million tons, the smallest since 1999 after the worst drought in at least half a century, according to government figures.

Russia has no "real competitor", Sukhanov said by phone from Moscow today.

Russia is forecast to export 15 million tons of wheat in the season started July 1, the fourth-largest after the U.S., Australia and Canada, according to the London-based International Grains Council. Ikar estimates Russia's wheat exports at 17 million tons, putting it on par with Australia.

Russia may get more competition on feed grains and corn exports from Ukraine if an export duty in Ukraine is lifted, possibly next month, Sukhanov said.
