IKAR in Mass and Industry Media Russian sugar imports rise Kingsman.com Dow Jones reports that Russia's raw imports amounted to 1.014 million tonnes in January / April, up 17 percent on the same period last year. The bulk of the imports, 681,000 tonnes, arrived in March/ April. Reuters reports that a slide in sugar futures has triggered physical demand from Russia as it enters the peak period for summer confectionery and soft drinks demand. The independent Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR) estimates Russia will consume 5.828 million tonnes of white sugar this year, compared with 5.863 million in 2005. Dow Jones writes that that Russia has completed its 2006 sugar beet planting, with the crop planted on 971,000 hectares, up 158,000 hectares on a year earlier. The Agriculture Ministry said nearly all the planted beet was in good condition, with enough moisture in the soil to ensure proper vegetation. (14th June 2006) 15.06.06
