Russia’s wheat farmers fear for next year’s crop

By Isabel Gorst
Published: September 6 2010

The concern is shared by experts. Dmitry Rylko, director of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies in Moscow, a consultancy, says patchy rainfall would allow for successful sowing only in some regions.

Another wheat crop failure would ruin many Russian farmers and put global grain markets under extraordinary pressure.

Analysts said the embargo had enraged grain traders and ports that have flourished during bumper harvests in the past two years. “Everything was working like a Swiss clock – and then it was stopped in one minute by a decree,” said Dmitry Rylko, the director of the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies, a Moscow-based consultancy.

Investors fear re-run of great grain robbery

By Isabel Gorst in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
Published: August 6 2010

Dmitry Rylko, the director of the Moscow-based Institute for Agricultural Market Studies, says the failed harvest, while creating “tremendous difficulties”, is unlikely to lead to an exodus of investors. “Russia is extremely promising for agriculture,” he says. “We have been lucky with the harvest for almost ten years. Crop failures happen everywhere from Argentina to Brazil and Ukraine.”
