Russian Grain Crop May Reach 96 Million Tons, IKAR Forecasts

Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Russian farmers may harvest as much as 96 million metric tons of grain in the coming marketing year after record-high winter sowing, the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies said.

The grain crop will total at least 90 million tons for the year starting July 1, Dmitry Rylko, the institute’s director, said today at a conference in Moscow. The current year’s harvest was 97 million tons.

Wheat output in the coming year will be about 55 million tons, according to IKAR, as the institute is known. Barley production will come to between 16 million and 17.9 million tons, Rylko said.

Coming days may be crucial in terms of damage to grain from winter weather after frosts reached southern Russia, the country’s breadbasket, he said. Conditions for newly sown plants remain “quite difficult” in central Russia and the Black Earth region as freezing weather persists, Rylko said.
