Russia – Sugar beet production to be 5.8 million tonnes in the new agricultural year

Interfax

Interfax. Russia, in 2017/2018 agricultural year, will see a reduction in sugar production to 5.8 million tonnes from 6.09 million tonnes in the current agricultural year, predicts a leading expert from the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR). "In the next agricultural year we have a moderately optimistic forecast: the relatively favorable weather conditions of beet sugar could reduce production to 5.8 million tonnes", said E. Ivanov. He noted that the processing of sugar beet harvest in 2016 is still ongoing where the production of sugar from it is estimated at 6.09 million tonnes.

E. Ivanov said the forecast for the next agricultural year is based on the fact that the sugar beet crops will decrease by 4.5%, to 1.06 million hectares. "Farmers retained investment interest in crops and especially for oilseeds and legumes in the export-oriented regions of the south. Therefore, to maintain sufficient interest to sugar beet processors, the state will have to make additional efforts to ensure the crop is not reduced by more than 6%." he said.

The expert doubts that 2017/18 productivity in Altai will reach record levels achieved. He said that in 2016 the production of sugar from 1 ha in the south was 6.33 tonnes against 5.53 tonnes in 2015 whereas Altai was 6.04 tonnes against 5.29 tonnes respectively. E. Ivanov also said that in the Russian Federation saw an increase in 2016 sugar exports to 97,000 tonnes from 6,000 tonnes a year earlier. At the same time, the high activity of Ukraine and other CIS countries on the common sugar market does not allow the Russian sugar to confidently deploy sugar in the world market, he said. At the same time, other experts estimate the export potential to be more than 600,000 tonnes.
