Cold spell set for south Russia poses risks to winter wheat -analyst

MOSCOW, Jan 27 (Reuters) - A cold spell expected in parts of Russia's southern regions of Rostov and Krasnodar between Jan. 27 and Feb. 4 poses risks to winter wheat sowings in the area, Russia's IKAR agriculture consultancy said in a note on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to fall in the south-western part of the Rostov region and the north-western part of the Krasnodar region to -8/-17 Celsius (17.6/1.4 Fahrenheit).

The area is not currently protected by snow, Dmitry Rylko, the head of IKAR, said in the note. Both Krasnodar and Rostov are important wheat producing areas.

Rylko estimates growing areas at risk of damage at about 400,000-500,000 hectares in the Rostov region and 300,000-400,000 hectares in the Krasnodar region.

In the autumn, Russian farmers sowed winter grains on 17.4 million hectares for the 2017 crop, up from 16.3 million hectares the year before, and on 100 percent of the planned area.
