Platts/Kingsman Daily Sugar News

Russia is expected to produce 5.6 million mt of sugar in 2016, up 8% from the 5.2 million mt produced in 2015, Russian consultant IKAR said. Recently, Russia has increased production to become self-sufficient, the Moscow-based agency said. Domestic consumption is also projected to increase by 50,000 mt in 2016 to 5.85 million mt. Due to the higher production forecast, raw sugar imports are expected to fall to 100,000 in 2016-17 (August-July), down 58% from 238,000 mt in 2015-16. Refined sugar imports are also projected to decrease to 270,000 mt in 2016-17, compared with 279,000 mt in 2015-16, IKAR said.
