Wheat quality may fall in southern Russia: analyst

Southern Russia, key for wheat exports via the Black Sea, may reap a record wheat crop but of lower quality compared to last year, fuelling rivalry with next-door Ukraine, Dmitry Rylko, the head of agriculture consultancy IKAR, said on Wednesday. Russia, a major global wheat exporter selling the commodity to North Africa and the Middle East, saw excessive rains at the end of last week which raised concerns among some analysts that this could affect the quality of its wheat crop, and that its farmers might sow less maize than originally planned.

"The (wheat) crop in the south will probably be at a record level or close to it," Rylko told a conference in the Black Sea city of Gelendzhik. Russia may harvest 64.5 million tonnes of wheat in 2016, Rylko told the conference. In late May, IKAR, a leading Moscow-based consultancy, forecast a crop of 63.5 million tonnes.
