Feed Grains: French barley expands presence outside EU

CNS Canada

WINNIPEG, May. 5 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Thursday, May 5.

CBOT corn futures finished 3 cents weaker on Thursday, with the July contract at US$3.7375 per bushel. The market was pressured by a decline in weekly ethanol production along with rapid seeding progress and favourable weather conditions in the US Midwest.

Spring wheat planting in South Dakota is 81 percent complete while two-thirds of the crop has been planted in Montana and Minnesota and 39 percent in North Dakota, according to the USDA. Numbers from the government also show that just over half of the entire US spring crop is in the ground.

Argentina has increased the amount of corn it ships to Brazil. During the first quarter of the year, Argentina exported 58,787 tonnes of corn to Brazil which was a new record.

France barley exports, outside the European Union, reached 450,000 tonnes in March. Morocco was one of the main destinations for the grain with the country receiving 178,000 tonnes during that time-frame, according to fresh customs data.

The agricultural consulting agency IKAR says Black Sea prices for Russian wheat (12.5% protein) reached US$191 per tonne on a free-on-board basis at the end of April. Russian grain exports were up 9 percent between July 1 to April 27.

Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$215 to C$218 per tonne range as of April 29, which was up C$3 to $5 from the week before, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$233 to C$237 range, which were slightly narrower than the price range set the week before.
